Vancouver, Canada – Semios, a Vancouver company that has introduced innovative, wireless technologies to agricultural pest control, has been selected as the lone Canadian finalist for the global Verizon “Powerful Answers Award.” The competition, run by American cell phone giant Verizon, will award $10M to innovators proposing powerful solutions to some of the world’s biggest problems.
Semios’ “Powerful Answer” is a pest control system that utilizes wireless networks and integrated devices across agricultural crops to deliver pest control, using pheromones rather than pesticides. Being considered under the “Sustainability” category, Semios enables growers to utilize non-toxic pheromones for pest control, greatly reducing or eliminating the need for toxic pesticides. The system has wide wide-reaching applications in crops around the world.
“Semios is thrilled to be a finalist in Verizon’s Powerful Answers Competition” said Dr. Michael Gilbert, Founder and CEO of Semios. “In the past 3 years of field testing in North America and Europe we have proven that better data makes for better decisions, ultimately creating better farming practices. We are extremely proud that our technology produces healthier fruit. Recognition of our solutions in this forum is inspiring, and we are excited to present this week in California to Verizon’s prestigious panel of judges.
Winners of the Verizon Powerful Answers Competition will be announced at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January, 2014. More information on the competition, including the press release announcing the finalists, can be found here.
